Case Study: Non-Profit Management Organization

Non-Profit Upgrades SharePoint and Business Intelligence Capabilities

Business Challenge

Disparate data, siloed teams, lack of visibility and insight-these were all very real challenges that our customer, a large, non-profit consulting care management organization, was facing. Without cooperation, knowledge management and clear understanding of accurate data, the customer was unable to make sound decisions. Its intranet was usable, but the customer wanted it to be a more effective tool for strategic and tactical organizational support. It was time to dramatically improve the intranet and leverage its true capability. The customer sought to upgrade to a newer version of SharePoint to take full advantage of the latest updates and features to improve the experience for its community. As part of the process, it also wanted to re-brand its intranet, redesign the site’s structure, and implement a new business intelligence system to provide reporting on its clinical system.

Our Solution

The organization interviewed numerous IT consulting firms on route to selecting i3solutions as its preferred Business Intelligence and Database experts. The customer’s IT Integrated services division worked with i3solutions to assist in the requirements, planning, and design stages for its upgrade to the new SharePoint and a new Business Intelligence intranet solution.

The first phase of this project was to upgrade its servers to the new Microsoft platforms. This included upgrading to SQL Server, Windows, and SharePoint. i3solutions helped the organization to design the server architecture for scalability, performance, and disaster recovery. Next, i3solutions installed and configured the new servers and integrated these environments. i3solutions then migrated the data, content and documents into the new platforms. This included an extensive upgrade of its SharePoint server farms into a consolidated architecture. i3solutions also designed a new information architecture to provide better navigation and usability across the organization. i3solutions also created custom branding for each of its different organization so each cold promote its own branding  and culture within this large organization.

The second phase of this project was to build a new Business Intelligence solution that could aggregate information across different locations and systems and provide better visualization of data. First, i3solutions created a new data warehouse capable of handling information from different disparate data sources. i3solutions worked with the organization to define the data dictionary and metadata to support the mashup of the various data. Next, i3solutions created the SSIS and web services needed to import and transform the data into the warehouse. i3solutions also created the data cubes and analysis packages needed to support the requested reports. i3solutions created online dashboards and report using SSRS and Dundas to provide better visualization and self-service reporting tools.


Now the organization can be confident in its ability to make sound organizational decisions. The new intranet, i3solutions created, is an integrated and intuitive Business Intelligence and Reporting tool that provides departments and communities with a common place to house the materials, making daily collaboration easy. The libraries contain the proper metadata which allow for the creation of appropriate views to categorize, sort, and filter documents. It provides the customer with a central repository where materials are easily found using the search capabilities integral with SharePoint.

In addition, users get to stay in SharePoint to access the critical data across different departments. The dashboard provide a visual display of top Key Performance indicators so that management team can track its important metrics on a real-time basis. The tools allow users to analyze data, view trends, and make better-informed decisions.
