Delivering Reports With Reporting Services

SQL Server Reporting Services supports both on-demand (pull) and event-based or scheduled (push) delivery of reports. Reporting Services also supports a variety of means to distribute reports in a variety of data formats (such as HTML, PDF file, Excel spreadsheet).

These reports can be tailored according to the delivered needs of the business process, such as:

  • Individual subscriptions
Users can create their own personalized subscriptions, defining preferences for receiving reports as well as which reports they want to receive. Subscriptions are subject to the security model, so users can only subscribe to the reports to which they have access.

  • Data-driven subscriptions
In a data-driven subscription, the list of report recipients is generated dynamically when the subscription executes, using an external data source such as an employee database. The data source might contain other kinds of information (such as hire date or job title) to enable users to filter report data or otherwise personalize the report.

  • SMTP delivery
Includes a delivery extension that enables the Report Server to connect to an SMTP server on the same network and deliver a report via e-mail.

  • File share directory
Includes a delivery extension that enables the Report Server to save reports to a file share.

For information on how report data can be accessed from virtually any data platform, see Data Access.
